CH Bird's Chessmen
I adore Bird's Chessmen. The simple design of the one-piece knight is never distracting on the board. No horse veins and nostrils to catch your eye while you are planning 3 moves ahead. And looking at the other pieces you will see the design is outstanding with a uniquely American take on the classic staunton design circa 1920s.
I personally think the kings, queens, and bishops are some of the handsomest around. Not to mention, the pieces have very wide bases and they are heavily weighted making them incredibly stable. I believe they are made of maple, and they have a beautiful patina. There are no leaners.
King stands 2.875" tall, but the wide bases make this a perfect fit for 1.75" squares (see pictures). It has been my personal set for a while, but I looked at it today and decided it was time for someone else to enjoy it! Comes with the original box (still holding together, but definitely worn) and the original CH BIRD HOW TO PLAY CHESS booklet.
At some point a few felts on a few pieces were replaced, but they were a very good match to the original and well done so I left it alone. Only the color varies. Nothing else to report!
